An Annual Event in Vienna
If you heard fire trucks circling your neighborhood last night then know that Santa was nearby.
Actually, it was the annual Santa run by the Vienna Volunteer Fire Department as they were driving around your side of town waving to kids and handing out candy canes.
Last night they were in my part of town, North East Vienna, and they didn’t miss driving up our street!
We knew that they were heading our way because the siren was wailing as they drove around nearby cul-de-sacs at 5 mph stopping at every other house as kids waved. Funny that it’s always an unexpected event that happens around dinner time in mid December. They actually post a schedule on their web site, but that can change due to weather ~ a wet Santa can lose his jolly demeanor rather quickly.
The gleaming 1946 Maxim fire truck they tour in was originally purchased by the VVFD brand new back in 1946. After years of service, the fire engine was given away to a rural fire department but returned in the 1990’s, fully restored, and has been involved in Town of Vienna Virginia events ever since.
By the way, do you know how to drive a 1946 style vehicle? You might want to contact the Vienna Volunteer Fire Department to discuss helping out with this truck in the future.
